Building Scanning

To ensure we minimized any disturbance, we utilized our Faro Focus Laser Scanners which have the functionality of a quiet mode. We were able to move quickly and quietly from room to room, collecting approximately 294 scans per day, thus capturing the required areas of the building in only five working days. To verify the leveling and accuracy of the scan data, we used targets shot with a total station on site that were tied back into the scan data after registration. This process ensures that the point cloud produced from the scan data is of a high tolerance and adds redundancy to the information we collect. Moreover, we positioned the point cloud to OS coordinates using GPS, which we tied back into the total station positions.

Project Difficulties

Due to the project’s tight timeframe, we used BIM 360 to enable multiple team members to work on the same file at the same time. We delegated specific areas to team members to eliminate duplicate work and expedite the survey.
