Measured Building Surveys

If you are planning a refurb, extension or just simply re-jigging the space you have, then you’ll need an accurate and reliable measured building survey to help you plan.

Written by J. Jackson | Published: 22nd May 2025

Our client required accurate dimensions of specific internal walls and the roof of Wick Tower. The primary goal was to evaluate the existing fire safety strategy and determine whether an updated fire plan was necessary, based on the building’s structural layout and escape routes.

The project involved conducting a Measured Building Survey, focusing specifically on:

  • Internal walls of concern for fire safety planning.
  • The roof area, which could potentially impact fire evacuation or emergency response strategies.

What Is a Measured Building Survey?

Measured Building Survey will provide you with accurate measurements of key features of your building. It is essential if you plan to refurbish, re-plan, or extend the building in any way. The measurement data is then presented on 2D Drawings or a 3D Building Information Model (BIM), Perfect for your Designers to work up their proposed schemes.

Why Was the Survey Needed?

Following updated fire safety regulations and growing concern over resident safety in high-rise buildings, our client sought to ensure their building complied with the most current standards. This was particularly important in light of:

  • The evolving requirements post-Grenfell Tower tragedy.
  • Heightened scrutiny from building authorities and fire marshals.
  • A desire to proactively improve the safety infrastructure without costly retrofits later.

Accurate surveys form the foundation for designing effective evacuation plans, ensuring fire-resistant materials are installed appropriately, and understanding how smoke and fire might travel within the structure.

How Did Our Client Benefit From a SolidPoint Survey?

Accurate Data Collection

The client received all requested dimensional data, ensuring any safety evaluations were based on real-world measurements, not assumptions or outdated plans.

Fire Safety Improvements

The data provided an essential input for reassessing the current fire safety plan. It could lead to strategic upgrades in alarms, sprinkler systems, and evacuation routes, ultimately making the environment safer for residents.

Cost Efficiency

By investing in a thorough survey upfront, the client potentially avoided much larger future expenses related to emergency compliance, rework, or unsafe retrofits.

Why Choose SolidPoint?

Overall, this project took 5 days to complete (including time on-site and data processing), and only cost £3,500.

This project reinforced the value of precision in planning and the importance of proactive compliance with safety regulations. With the completed survey, the client is now well-positioned to make informed decisions that could significantly impact the lives of those living in the building.

What Our Client Received:
  • A comprehensive 2D model showing wall and roof dimensions.
  • Annotated drawings and measurements that could be directly used by architects or fire safety consultants.
  • A visual record of the survey process including on-site equipment use, intermediate data captures, and final outputs.

The Wick Tower Measured Building Survey is a strong example of using geospatial and architectural technology for public safety. Accurate building surveys are not just technical exercises – they’re vital tools for risk mitigation, resident well-being, and long-term asset planning.
