Maintaining commercial buildings is far easier and more cost effective when potential issues are identified before they become expensive repairs. For organisations responsible for multiple properties, regular condition inspections play a vital role in protecting assets, planning maintenance budgets, and ensuring buildings remain safe and operational.

For this project, Derby City Council required annual building condition surveys across their Connect Derby properties in the city. Their primary objective was to assess the condition of each building, including the roof, without the disruption, cost, and health and safety implications associated with erecting scaffolding.

Traditional roof inspections can be time consuming and expensive, particularly when access equipment is required simply to carry out a visual assessment. Our client wanted a faster, repeatable solution that would provide consistent, high quality data year after year while allowing maintenance teams to monitor changes over time.

To achieve this, we carried out a series of drone surveys, capturing detailed aerial imagery and digital models of each building to support Bowmer & Kirkland's own works for the project. Each site visit took approximately 5 hours to complete, allowing multiple properties to be surveyed efficiently while keeping disruption to a minimum.

This project demonstrates how drone surveys are becoming an increasingly valuable tool for property managers, facilities teams, local authorities, and organisations responsible for maintaining building portfolios.
