3D Drone Survey
If you need a large area of land surveying rapidly, or struggle to access it. Then an Aerial Drone Survey is your best option.
Written by J.Jackson | Published 16th October 2026
SolidPoint carried out a 3D drone survey at Moorways Sports Village in Derby, capturing detailed aerial information across the buildings and surrounding areas.
The survey created a comprehensive visual record of the site, including areas that can be difficult to properly assess from ground level. In particular, the aerial perspective provided improved visibility of roofs and high-level building services without requiring the same level of physical access.
Our Approach
By surveying from above, we were able to collect detailed imagery across the buildings, roof areas and wider site while gaining viewpoints that would be difficult to achieve through conventional ground-based scanning.
This approach is particularly useful for large or difficult-to-access sites. Drone technology allows high-resolution imagery and data to be captured from above, providing a more comprehensive overview of a site than is possible from ground level alone.
The captured information was then processed to produce a 3D representation of Moorways Sports Village, allowing the site to be explored digitally.
Project Deliverables
Our client received:
-
- Aerial images captured across the site
- An OBJ file of the surveyed area
- Access to the interactive 3D model
These deliverables provide both detailed visual information and an accessible 3D representation of Moorways Sports Village.
How Did Our Client Benefit From a Drone Survey?
1. Better Visibility of Difficult-to-Access Areas
One of the main benefits of using a drone was the ability to view parts of the buildings that would otherwise be difficult to see clearly.
Roof areas and high-level mechanical, electrical and plumbing features could be captured from above, giving the client useful visual information without requiring someone to physically access each area.
This can make drone surveys particularly valuable across large commercial buildings, where traditional access methods may be more disruptive, time-consuming or costly.
2. Explore the Site in 3D
Rather than relying solely on individual photographs, the client has access to a 3D representation of the buildings and surrounding site.
This provides greater context when reviewing the captured information. Users can understand how different areas relate to one another and explore the site remotely from a computer, alongside the individual aerial images captured during the survey.
The resulting digital model provides a practical way for project teams and stakeholders to review the existing site without relying entirely on repeat visits.
3. A Digital Record for Future Comparison
The survey also creates a valuable record of how Moorways Sports Village appeared at the time of capture.
If alterations, maintenance or refurbishment works are carried out in the future, the drone imagery and 3D model can provide a useful reference point for comparison. The client can return to the captured information to review previous conditions and better understand how areas of the site have changed over time.
This gives the survey value beyond the immediate project and provides a reusable digital resource for future site management and planning.
Project Outcome
The 3D drone survey provides a comprehensive digital overview of Moorways Sports Village, combining aerial imagery with an interactive model that can be reviewed away from site.
Most importantly, the survey improves visibility of areas that are difficult to assess from ground level while giving the client a digital record that can continue to support future decisions about the site.
Why Choose SolidPoint?
For commercial sites, sports facilities and other large developments where access or visibility presents a challenge, 3D drone surveys provide an efficient way to capture detailed site information from a completely different perspective.
