Client Goals
SolidPoint was commissioned to carry out a CCTV drainage survey at a commercial site on Jubilee Drive in Loughborough. The client was planning to install a new cleaning unit within their business and needed to understand the existing drainage network so that effluent trade waste could be appropriately directed into the system.
As part of the requirements for the proposed connection, Severn Trent requested a comprehensive drainage plan showing the site's sewer network and where it connected to the public system. The client therefore needed a clear record of the drainage routes, depths and connections, alongside information on the internal condition of the accessible pipework.
Our Approach
Our surveyor attended the site to investigate and map the accessible drainage network. The scope covered drainage runs of 75mm diameter or greater where access to the pipework was possible, including foul drains, surface water drains and combined sewers.
Accessible drainage chambers were surveyed to a maximum depth of 3 metres from the manhole opening. CCTV equipment was used to inspect the inside of the drainage runs, providing a visual record of their condition and helping identify connections, defects and other relevant features within the system.
The site work was completed in approximately 6 hours, followed by a further two hours of processing.
Project Deliverables
Following the survey, the information was compiled into a detailed set of deliverables, including:

- AutoCAD DWG drainage drawings showing surveyed routes, section references and depths
- PDF survey drawings
- Drainage condition report with supporting images
- Manhole cards detailing the investigated chambers
- Site photographs and CCTV records
The CAD drawing documented routes, depths and section references, while the condition report and supporting imagery provided additional information about the surveyed drainage network.
How Did Our Client Benefit From a CCTV Survey?
1. A Clear and Accurate Drainage Plan
One of the client's main requirements was to establish how the site's drainage system was arranged and where it connected into the wider public network.
The completed drainage survey provided a mapped record of the accessible system, including drainage routes and depths.
Having this information available in both CAD and PDF formats gave the client a practical technical record that could be shared with relevant parties and used when considering the connection of the new cleaning unit.
2. Supporting the Proposed Trade Effluent Connection
The installation of the new cleaning unit meant the client needed to establish an appropriate route for trade effluent into the existing drainage network.
Rather than relying on assumptions about where individual drains travelled or connected, the CCTV drainage survey provided information about the site's drainage layout and connectivity. CCTV surveys are particularly useful when investigating potential new connections or rerouting because they allow accessible drainage to be inspected internally while its routes and connections are recorded.
This gave the client better information to support discussions surrounding the proposed connection and the drainage information requested by Severn Trent.
3. A Record of Drainage Condition and Defects
Alongside mapping the drainage system, the CCTV footage provided a visual record of the condition of the accessible pipework.
Any defects or faults identified during the inspection could be recorded within the survey information, giving the client evidence of areas that may require further investigation, maintenance or repair.
The footage and supporting photographs also created a useful record for future maintenance. Instead of only knowing where the drainage runs were located, the client had information showing their condition at the time of the survey.
Project Outcome
The CCTV drainage survey provided the client with a clearer understanding of the drainage system at their commercial premises in Loughborough.
With the drainage routes mapped, connections investigated and accessible pipework inspected internally, the client had a more complete record to support the proposed installation of the new cleaning unit and the information requested by Severn Trent.
The resulting drawings, manhole information, photographs and condition records also provide useful information for ongoing drainage maintenance and future works.
