Point Cloud Surveys

Your Land and Buildings can be rapidly surveyed using 3D laser Scanners. This will provide an accurate existing or as-built 3D point cloud record of your land and buildings.

When existing equipment within an industrial facility needs to be replaced or redesigned, having accurate information about the surrounding space is an important starting point. Measurements of walls, floors, ceilings, mezzanines and other existing features can directly influence how new equipment is designed, positioned and installed.

SolidPoint was commissioned to undertake a point cloud survey at an industrial factory in Hull. The purpose of the survey was to provide the client's design team with accurate point cloud data that could be used while redesigning an area of the factory ahead of equipment replacement.

For a project involving an existing industrial environment, relying on basic measurements or historic drawings can introduce unnecessary uncertainty. Equipment may need to work within tight spatial constraints, while existing structures and surrounding features can influence everything from dimensions and positioning to installation access.

A point cloud survey provided NIRAS with a detailed digital record of the existing environment, giving its design team reliable spatial information to work from during the redesign process.

The total cost of the project was £2,284.

Our Approach

Our survey team attended the factory at the weekend, when the facility was closed. This was particularly beneficial within an operational industrial environment, as it meant the survey could be completed without having to work around normal factory activity.

With fewer operational restrictions, our surveyors were able to move around the required area efficiently and capture the necessary data without interruptions. The entire site survey was completed within approximately 8 hours, meaning only one day on site was required.

Once the site work had been completed, the captured scans were processed and registered. SolidPoint's standard point cloud workflow includes quality assurance during and after registration to help ensure that clients receive a reliable and usable dataset.

Processing for this particular project took approximately eight hours, after which the requested point cloud survey data was issued to the client.

How Did Our Client Benefit From a Point Cloud Survey?

1. Accurate Existing Information for Equipment Redesign

The primary benefit for NIRAS was having a detailed representation of the existing factory space available to its design team.

Point cloud data can be viewed, measured and incorporated into wider digital design workflows, helping designers understand the relationship between proposed equipment and the physical environment around it. SolidPoint's point cloud surveys are intended to provide accurate, comprehensive data that can be integrated into CAD, BIM and other visualisation workflows.

For NIRAS, this meant less reliance on assumptions and a clearer understanding of the space available for the planned changes.

2. Reduced Risk of Material Waste and Rework

Accurate survey information can also have a direct impact on project costs.

If equipment, structural alterations or associated components are designed using incorrect dimensions, problems may only become apparent when manufacturing or installation has already begun. At that stage, changes can be considerably more expensive than correcting the design digitally.

The detailed measurements captured during the survey can help the project team assess how proposed works relate to existing walls, floor levels, ceilings and the mezzanine before installation begins.

3. Fast Surveying with Minimal Factory Disruption

Another important consideration was how the survey could be completed without unnecessarily interfering with factory operations.

Industrial sites can be challenging environments to survey while they are fully operational. Machinery, employees, vehicles and day-to-day production activities can restrict access and make it more difficult to capture clear, complete data.

To avoid these issues, the survey was undertaken during the weekend while the factory was closed. This provided uninterrupted access to the required area and allowed the survey team to complete the site work in approximately 8 hours.
